IQP Backflow Prevention Course with Unit Standards

The course is intended for those who want to register with Councils to become IQP certified in Backflow prevention and gain the following Unit Standards:
NZQA Unit Standard 23847 - Prepare to test, and inspect and test, water supply backflow prevention devices.
NZQA Unit Standard 23848 - Describe suitability, installation, and testing of water supply backflow prevention devices, and fault identification.
It is a 2-day workshop with 16 hours of self-directed learning via Google Classroom.

Our Trainer, Glen Burr, has just completed the Moderation with ICE for this course and is an approved to deliver it and award the Unit Standards under ICE.

The course is intended for those who want to register with Councils to become IQP certified in Backflow prevention but not limited to this. Theory components include:

  • Knowledge of the building act 2004 sections 100-111
  • Knowledge of the compliance schedule handbook
  • Forms relevant to an IQP including defect reports and reports in Lieu

Good working knowledge of but not limited to the following:

  • Health Act 1956
  • Health and Safety Act 2015
  • Health (Drinking Water Act) Amended 2007
  • Local government act 2002
  • AS/NZS 2845.1 2010 water supply-backflow prevention devices
  • AS/NZS 3500.1 2018 plumbing and drainage – water service
  • NZS 5807:1990 Code of practice for industrial identification by colour, wording or other coding
  • New Zealand building code clause G10 Piped services
  • New Zealand building code clause G12 Water Supplies
  • Boundary backflow prevention (drinking water) 2013
  • Cross connection manual 2003
  • Test sheets and testing procedures

Practical testing includes:

  • Testing of backflow devices in accordance with the cross-connection manual
  • RPZ – Double check valve – Vacuum breakers – Visual tests on on-testable device

Duration: 2 days (two consecutive days) and 16 hrs self-directed learning

Course Format: Blended – Classroom and Online

Assessment: On completion of the course there will be a theory and practical assessment for both Unit Standards.

With over 28 years’ experience in the plumbing, gas fitting and drain laying industry. Glen is a member of our National Technical Advisory Panel and the President of the NZPDGA. Glen is also a member of the Water NZ Backflow committee and a subject matter expert for Skills NZ. THE NZPDGA was established in 1894 to “protect the health and safety of our community.” NZPGDA members are fully qualified, licensed and honour a code of conduct.

We promote awareness of the standards required and our members are kept up to date with the latest rules, regulations, skills required and training which they implement throughout their businesses. We take pride in developing the profile of the plumbers, drainlayers and gasfitters who are members of our Association.

Glen has a wealth of experience in plumbing and backflow and the building compliance process. Being a practising IQP for SS7, Glen brings direct, practical, and technical hands-on experience from providing building inspections, installation, and design, plumbing maintenance and engineering. Glen also holds a certificate in adult education and is currently studying towards a post graduate diploma in tertiary teaching.
