Q. What is an IQP?
An Independently Qualified Person (IQP) is someone who has the qualifications, skills, knowledge, and experience to inspect, maintain, and report on specified systems within buildings, in accordance with the Building Act 2004. IQPs play an important role in ensuring building safety and compliance.
Q. How do you become an IQP?
To become an IQP, you must demonstrate that you meet the competency requirements for the specified system(s) you wish to inspect or maintain. You will need to submit an application to the relevant Territorial Authority (TA), who will assess your qualifications, experience, and supporting documentation before granting registration.
Q. What qualifications does one need to be an IQP?
ABC supports the IQP registration process by providing information, guidance, and training. However, each Territorial Authority (TA) has its own IQP registration requirements and assessment process. If you are applying to become an IQP, you should check directly with the relevant Territorial Authority to confirm their specific application requirements, qualifications, and documentation. Final approval and registration decisions remain the responsibility of the relevant Territorial Authority.

No.
Q. Does every TA require the same qualifications to register?
No. While many Territorial Authorities have similar requirements, each TA sets its own criteria for IQP registration. It is important to check the requirements of the TA where you intend to register.
Q. Do I need ABC membership to become IQP registered?
Membership requirements vary depending on the Territorial Authority and the registration scheme being administered. Please check the requirements for your TA or contact ABC if you are unsure.
Q. What training does ABC provide?
ABC offers a range of training programmes designed to support professionals working with building compliance and specified systems. Courses include IQP-related training, regulatory updates, technical workshops, and continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities.
Q. What Specified Systems do I need?
The specified system(s) you require depend on the type of work you perform and the systems you intend to inspect, maintain, or certify. Common specified systems include fire alarms, sprinkler systems, emergency lighting, lifts, mechanical ventilation, and backflow prevention. Your registration should only cover systems for which you are suitably qualified and experienced.
Q. Is ABC training TA approved?
ABC training is developed to support industry best practice and assist participants in meeting competency requirements. However, acceptance of training towards IQP registration is determined by each Territorial Authority. Applicants should confirm with their TA if they have any questions regarding recognition of specific courses.
Q. Can I complete training without a membership?
Yes. Most ABC training courses are available to both members and non-members, although members may receive discounted pricing and access to additional benefits.
